Manuel Mon: icon of Spanish Avant-Garde
Thanks to the Farfalla collection, Manuel Mon won the 2022 Fígaro Award in the Avant-Garde category, where he had two nominations. This way, he defended the title he already won in 2021, in 2018 -alongside his great friend Gonzalo Zarauza- and in 2014. As if that weren't enough, in 2017 he claimed the title of Spanish Hairdresser of the Year. A meteoric career that has made him one of the best creative artists in the industry. He tells us about his experience in the latest edition of the competition!
How do you create a collection for the Fígaro Awards and what is your creative process?
Whether it is for the Fígaro Awards or because you want to create a signature collection, the process is comparable. It is very important to surround yourself with a good team: photography, styling, etc. The original idea is a starting point, what you want to convey and, from that moment, the main concepts are developed, such as the final image and the techniques to be applied. It is essential to effectively communicate the concept of that collection to your collaborators.
Could you share your experience of the backstage atmosphere and the Fígaro Catwalk?
In my case, I experience it as a great gathering of friends, where there is a fantastic atmosphere of companionship, sharing experiences and good times.
What do you feel when you finally see your work on the catwalk?
A great personal satisfaction to see reflected on that runway what you have wanted to represent with your work from the beginning. It is the final culmination of the effort, work, and dedication you have put into preparing a collection, with the time and investment it entails.
What does winning a Fígaro Award mean to you as a professional?
It brings great joy and satisfaction, both for the brand and for the entire team involved.
What would you highlight about your winning collection?
I would highlight the elegance, the combination of techniques, and the overall image, including the runway show. I believe that in Farfalla, I have been able to showcase the brand's image and work style.
In your opinion, how do the Fígaro Awards help to give prestige to the profession?
The Fígaro Awards are the perfect platform for our profession: they bring visibility to the brand and the personal image sector, nationally and internationally.
What advice would you give to other colleagues who also want to succeed in the Fígaro Awards?
I would advise them to create their collections simply to build their brand and showcase their creativity, not just to enter a competition to win. Enjoying the work, regardless of the final outcome of a competition, is essential.
There is a significant part of the industry that does not explore the more artistic aspect of the profession. What does it bring to you, and why do you think it is important?
As mentioned earlier, brands must show their way of understanding the world of image. On a client level, it is essential for them to understand our approach to the profession and the creation of collections. Whether for competitions or at the brand and image level, it helps us share our vision with clients and digital and print media.

The Club
The objective pursued by Club FÍGARO is recognition, both professionally and socially; thus raising our profession to the category of excellence, just as sectors such as fashion or gastronomy did at the time. Our mission is aimed at making our work known, admired and respected, both in the national and international territory, thus consolidating an increasingly cosmopolitan and powerful industry.
The Contest
The Spanish Hairdressing Awards, also called Fígaro Awards, value the photographic works of the hairdressing creations of the participating firms, to reward the most outstanding creative hairdressers in the country. They consist of five categories and were established in 2009 to give notoriety and visibility to the artistic work of Spanish hairdressers. The basic objective pursued by Club Fígaro with the creation of these awards is the social and professional recognition of hairdressing in Spain to consolidate an industry that is increasingly cosmopolitan and powerful.
Participating hairdressers register online to participate and upload their photographic collections to the Club Fígaro website. Afterward, the professional jury, made up of prominent personalities from national and international hairdressing and which changes every year, individually and independently votes the collections submitted anonymously, so impartiality is guaranteed.
Club Fígaro has the support of its main sponsor Revlon Professional, Salón Look IFEMA MADRID, a leading trade fair event, as official partner and The Hair MBA, as collaborator. Finally, Club Fígaro has the support of the main professional beauty magazines and portals in Spain.
